It's All About The Match
The most important resource to a service-based business is its people. This makes successful hiring a necessity. So what can you do to set yourself up for success when hiring? It is all about the match!
When hiring, it is always important that there is a solid match between the position and the candidate. A match in the following four key areas is critical:
- “Skill Set” Match–The candidate must meet the education, training, experience and certification/license criterion for the available position. The “Skill Set” is often determined by the profession.
- “Job Requirements” Match–The position must match the interests and availability of the candidate. Trying to match a candidate looking to work with children to a position serving adults is like trying to fit the proverbial “square peg in a round hole.” Trying to match a part time position with a candidate that only wants full time work may last for a while, but, most likely will not result in a long term employee relationship.
- “Company and Culture” Match–The candidate must be a “Right Fit” for the business in terms of personality, communication style, values, attitudes and demeanor. The candidate must be one who will collaborate with other staff and the public being served.
- “Compensation” Match–Providing a compensation and benefit package in line with the current market will go far to solidify the new relationship.
When interviewing, I typically determine if there is a “match” via open ended questioning, probing and presenting scenarios related to the position. I also include other staff in the interviewing process. Near the end of this process, I discuss with the candidate the importance of having a “match” to a successful hiring outcome for both parties. I always ask the candidate, “Do you feel this company and this position is a “match” for your qualifications and interests? Why or Why not?” Listen carefully to the response.
Assuring you have a “match” in these four areas, takes the guess work out of the hiring process and sets you on a path for successful hiring.
