20 Retention Strategies

Retention starts with recruitment—It’s all about the MATCH! The MATCH fosters retention!

Next key retention strategy is ONBOARDING! The training and support you provide from the first day sets the tone for the employee’s entire tenure at your practice.

The MATCH + ONBOARDING + SPECIFIC RETENTION STRATEGIES = An increased likelihood to RETAIN VALUED STAFF.

Retention Strategies

  1. Meet with your team regularly
  2. Encourage working as a team
  3. Meet with staff 1:1; this can be both formal and informal; staff should never fear a meeting with you
  4. Have clear-cut performance review guidelines
  5. Be present and available to your staff
  6. Foster open communication; listen and be responsive to ideas, questions, concerns.
  7. Get to know your staff professionally and personally
  8. Encourage staff to build relationships among themselves
  9. Be clear on policies, procedures and expectations.
  10. Set SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Based)
  11. Be transparent and open
  12. Offer mentorships in areas of high interest
  13. Recognize and reward accomplishments/milestones—big and small; recognize anniversary dates/birthdays
  14. Provide continuous feedback on performance—formal and informal.
  15. Consider a monthly or quarterly staff newsletter
  16. Be as flexible as possible—the pandemic certainly taught us this!
  17. Empower your staff—do NOT micromanage!
  18. Have fun! Plan group activities inside and outside the office environment!
  19. Take time for sufficient onboarding.
  20. Conduct an exit interview for all staff leaving the practice.
