BLOG: Summer Program Planning

Summer Program Planning

Spring is here and the end of the school year is fast approaching. Parents are quickly turning their attention to summer programs and camps to keep kids busy and improve their skills! Parents are also thinking about the struggles their child may have experienced during the last school year and if they will be able to keep up in the fall. Children who have IEPs during the school year will be without that support during the summer months, contributing to "summer brain drain" or "summer slide".

Build your programs with your clients' needs in mind. What worked in the past in attracting new clients and adding services to existing ones? Be creative. Take a fresh look at the skills you and your staff have to offer.

Consider creating a camp from bundling two or more services. Bundling allows you to be creative. For example, you can bundle Fast ForWord with one-on-one or small group tutoring, or speech-language therapy. Or bundle occupational and speech therapy around a theme (i.e., A Day at the Beach, or Gardening) to give therapy a fun twist. Bundling can increase revenue while providing needed services for your client in a fresh format.

If you are an in-network provider with insurance carriers, you will need to take your contractual obligations into account. For example, there are rules about insurance billing in co-treatment situations. One way to avoid those issues is to create "camps" in lieu of "therapy". A camp becomes a private pay offering. A camp does not have an individual treatment plan for each child and there is no data taken. This precludes it from being insurance billable.

Summer Programs are a win-win for your clients and your practice!

Be Creative! Roll up your sleeves and start working on your summer programming plan. Now is the time!
